Biographie de l'artiste

After studying sociology, Marc Montméat was gradually drawn to careers in social work, so that he could work in contact with people experiencing difficult circumstances. He then decided to work with inmates, and in 2002 he won a position as placement and probation counsellor. Since then he has had an opportunity to work in various prisons, always with the objective of preparing inmates to leave the prison system. He works at the Maison d'Arrêt of Angoulême where he has lived for the last four years.

Alongside this career activity, he got his start in photography in 2004. Influenced by humanistic photography, he has developed a unique view of the world around him, and most especially urban landscapes. A parallel gradually formed between the isolation he experienced in his work and the “prisonisation” of the city that he wanted to express. Man, minuscule in the face of his environment, comes to interfere in this graphic and oppressive city.

A winner of the Grand Prix SFR Jeunes Talents in 2009, he saw his work exhibited at the major photographic events (Les Rencontres d'Arles, Paris Photo). Since then he completed a photographic work on the prison world in spring 2010 and he continues to participate in exhibitions, as in London last summer.
